Umair, this is I think one of your best columns. Because it is so totally true.

I live in Medellín, Colombia because I could no longer stand living in Trump's America. And I could not afford to live a middle-class lifestyle in retirement anywhere in any city in the U.S.

I'd like to see you write about how much of America's support of fascist states is tied to another unwinnable war: The War on Drugs.

It is said that the exports of cocaine from Colombia to satisfy the demand in the United States far exceeds anything Pablo Escobar could ever imagine. The cartels reached a de-facto peace deal, stay out of the cities, and go about their business rather quietly.

60%+ of Americans do not possess a passport. They are supremely ignorant of life outside the United States. Their ignorance makes them very susceptible to right-wing propaganda about supporting the military and fearing Social Democracy, which they label as Radical Left Wing Socialism.

Sadly, instead of taking a trip to Europe, South America, or Southeast Asia, and meeting the people there, they'd rather go to Disney World or on a cruise, where they are in a foreign port city for a few hours at each stop.

As P.T. Barnum said, "no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people".

I am 72, and I've been a progressive since I was in high school in 1963. I will likely die before seeing the slightest progress in the psyche of the American electorate, who are still the suckers they always were, buying into the corporate induced fantasy called the "American Dream".
