You are very lucky that you were able to emigrate to Europe. There are not very many ways to get a resident visa and some resident visas are tied to your job. Lose you job, lose your right to stay in Europe.

Marriage, lineage, or wealth are the only legal ways I am aware of for an American to legally reside in Europe.
